How to Achieve Flow State

“Those who flow as life flows know they need no other force.”

– Lao Tzu🙏

I shared a post earlier this week about Flow State and a few people asked for more on the topic.

It is one of my favorite topics because it took me DECADES to find my flow.

And, that is why I do what I do as a coach.

I want to reduce the amount of time it takes for people to find their flow…in business or personal lives.

Because, once we find our flow, life really becomes magical.

SO… what is this magical Flow State?

Flow state, often referred to as “being in the zone,” is a mental state where an individual is fully immersed in an activity, feeling energized, focused, and experiencing a sense of heightened creativity and productivity.

It’s the feeling of time slipping away as you become completely absorbed in what you’re doing.

Here, we are going to explore how this state of heightened focus and creativity can transform the way you work and live.

The Flow State Formula

Achieving flow state involves a delicate balance of challenge and skill. When the challenge of a task matches your skill level, you are more likely to enter a flow state.

Here’s a quick formula:

  • Challenge level > Skill level = Anxiety
  • Challenge level < Skill level = Boredom
  • Challenge level = Skill level = Flow State

Benefits of Flow State

  • Enhanced Productivity: Tasks are completed faster and with higher quality in a flow state.
  • Increased Creativity: Innovative ideas often emerge effortlessly.
  • Heightened Focus: Distractions fade into the background.
  • Improved Well-being: Flow leads to a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.
  • Timelessness: Hours can feel like minutes when in flow.

How to Get into Flow State

  • Clear Goals: Have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish.
  • Immediate Feedback: Receive feedback on your progress.
  • Challenge Yourself: Find tasks that match your skills but push your limits.
  • Minimize Distractions: Create a conducive environment.
  • Passion and Interest: Choose activities you’re passionate about.
  • Practice and Patience: Flow is a skill that can be developed over time.

Examples of Flow Activities

  • Writing
  • Painting
  • Coding
  • Dancing
  • Sports
  • Cooking
  • Playing an instrument
